The Sealed Knot's August Bank Holiday Major

Basing House - 27th to 30th August

The Sealed Knot will be providing three days of displays, education and entertainment at Basing House in Hampshire over the August bank holiday weekend, for our client Hampshire County Council. The event marks the property's re-opening after a year-long Heritage Lottery funded development project and we aim to deliver something really spectacular to mark the occasion.

Read more about the exciting developments taking place at Basing House on HCC's website here.

The host regiment, Col Stephen Hawkins Rof(www.hawkinsrof.com

warmly invites fellow Sealed Knot members to join us at what we hope will be a very special August Bank Holiday event.

This microsite is provided by Hawkins RoF as a resource centre for Sealed Knot members attending the event as participants.  If you've come across the site and are not a member of the Sealed Knot, you may wish to visit instead ww3.hants.gov.uk/museum/basing-house.htm, where you can find more information about Hampshire County Council's Basing House project, and visitor opening times.

We hope that you'll come and see the Sealed Knot (www.thesealedknot.org.uk) at the English Civil War re-enactment event at Basing House on 28th - 30th August.   If this microsite whets your appetite to join Hawkins RoF and take an active role in the event (and more...) you can find details of how to join us on the regiment's website.

 Information for members

At Basing, we have the privilege of "re-enacting" on the actual site where the events we portray took place.  When war broke out in 1642, Basing House was home to the Marquis of Winchester and the largest private house in England.  The Marquis lived up to his family motto "Aymez Loyaulte" (Love Loyalty) and held the house for the King through three sieges, a symbol for the Royalist cause, until its eventual fall to Cromwell in October 1645.  Following the violent final storming the House was destroyed by fire and Parliament ordered the complete destruction of what remained.  The ruins survive and are the site and backdrop for our event.

Within this microsite, you can find (among other things) details of the event timings and an outline of the event programme with details of the plans for each day (Saturday, Sunday and Monday).  Please also have a look at the "getting involved" pages for ideas on how you and your regiment can get stuck in and help us deliver a really special, engaging, enjoyable, spectacular event.

We have included some information about the history of Basing House during the Civil War if you are interested in learning more.

You can also find housekeeping information about travelling to Basing and local facilities during your stay.

All Sealed Knot members are welcome at the event but those wishing to camp on the living history site must pre-book.  Contact details for booking in are in your "Orders of the Daye".
