Event Programme
Follow the links below for full details of each day's programme:
Monday 30 August - "The Battle for Basing: Fire and Brimstone" (1645)
Hampshire County Council has asked that we utilise the entire site, to encourage their visitors to explore and better understand the historic ruins, and that we make our programme specially relevant to Basing House. Read more about how we are using the site, and the different LH "zones", here
Each day’s programme will portray a different year during which Basing House was under siege. On Saturday “Peace Shatters” in 1643; on Sunday “The Changing Fortunes of War” in 1644; and on Monday “Fire and Brimstone” with the fall of Basing House to Cromwell in 1645.
We’re building on 2009’s programme, using more of the site whilst still aiming to keep the friendly feel and good visitor engagement of past Basing musters… “the Mini within the Major”.
The site expands for Sunday and Monday with the addition of the Common and for this “Battle for Basing” element of the event, the Sealed Knot will almost be in a position to field the same numbers of people who were involved with some of the earlier engagements we are portraying. Sunday’s battle will re-create the garrison’s unsuccessful raid on Odiham in June 1644, and the relief of the siege by Royalist troops from Oxford under Colonel Gage in the September. On Monday we will conclude the weekend with the final storming and fall of the House in October 1645.
